Over one hundred outbreaks of infectious diseases were reported that were associated with ships between 1970 and 2000 (WHO 2001). Reported outbreaks included legionellosis, typhoid fever, salmonellosis, viral gastroenteritis, enterotoxigenic E coli infection, shigellosis, cryptosporidiosis and trichinosis. Naval, cargo and cruise vessels were all affected, often with serious operational and financial consequences.

These reported outbreaks represent just a small proportion of the total disease burden attributable to ship-acquired disease. For every notified and reported case listed in outbreak reports, there are likely to be orders of magnitude more cases that go unreported. Ships can have significance to public health beyond just their role in ship-acquired infection. For example, ships can transport infected humans and other vectors, such as mosquitoes and rats, between ports and, therefore, act as a means of national and international disease transfer. If proper control measures are not in place, ships are particularly prone to disease outbreaks. s and common food and water supplies. Such conditions are favourable to the spread of infectious diseases. The inevitable publicity that comes along with a disease outbreak aboard ship can seriously impact financially on the ship owners and those relying on use of the ship for transport or leisure.

Becoming ill aboard ship can be particularly dangerous because the ship may be isolated from medical centres. Furthermore, once an outbreak has been reported aboard ship it may not be permitted to dock. It is estimated that 1.2 million seafarers are employed on general cargo vessels. Many spend months at sea, sometimes in remote regions of the world. Cargo ships on long voyages are isolated communities. Good sanitation conditions on vessels are crucial both to the health of seafarers and to the shipping industry’s ability to attract and retain competent employees.

The treatment of drinking water on vessels provides a major challenge for ship operators especially when water qualities can vary from port to port. A direct dosing system that introduces safe levels of ActivSure disinfecting fluids from EcaSafe into a vessels drinking water system provides a very high level of safety when compared to many conventional alternatives Contact us to learn what we do.

Infection Control. Outbreaks of highly contagious gastro-intestinal illness such as Norovirus which causes vomiting and diarrhea are often found in settings with close living quarters such as cruise ships. The cruise industry has worked hard in recent years to reduce the number and severity of outbreaks of norovirus and other gastro-intestinal illnesses.

ActivSure disinfecting fluids from EcaSafe can help prevent and combat outbreaks. The fluid is safe to use and can be applied directly or in vapour form while passengers and crew are present..

Medical Facilities The regular disinfection and sterilizing of medical facilities and apparatus is essential for welfare.

EcaSafe recommends that you follow manufacturers recommendations for medical apparatus. MediGuard, ProGuard and/or Industrial solutions disinfecting fluids can be used as an alternative to aggressive chemicals. They can be applied on surfaces to control pathogens and prevent the spread of infections.

ActivSure cleaning fluids from EcaSafe can be produced on board whenever needed. They are strong surfactants that can be incorporated into the cleaning regime.

ActivSure has 2 different types of cleaning fluids. The first is generated in small quantities in the ProGuard unit. It is capable of making 1.2 litres of fluid in 10 minutes. This is usually sufficient for most small cleaning tasks such as in the galley, restaurants, bars etc.

The second type of cleaner is produced in the larger industrial units. If the vessel operator has already purchased an industrial unit for their water treatment or hygiene management then the same unit can produce most of the their cleaning fluids. They don’t need to buy anything extra.

ActivSure disinfecting fluids from EcaSafe can be produced on board and dosed into heating or cooling systems to control waterborne pathogens such as legionella. The fluid is highly effective in breaking down biofilms in pipework and because it carries a residual it can keep systems clean and pathogen free.

ActivSure disinfecting fluids from EcaSafe are ideally suited to bathing water purification. They are safe, economic and highly effective.

Water features are often difficult to keep pathogen free. Not anymore. ActivSure disinfecting fluids from EcaSafe dosed at low levels into the circulation system controls pathogens.
